Scenic Himalayan Wilderness in Darjeeling Hills.
Singalila National Park
Nestled high in the Eastern Himalayas along the Indo-Nepal border, Singalila
National Park is one of the most pristine and enchanting natural treasures of West
Bengal. Situated at elevations ranging from 7,000 to over 12,000 feet, this park is
renowned for its breathtaking mountain vistas, diverse flora and fauna, and the
opportunity to witness some of the world’s highest peaks, including Kanchenjunga
and, on clear days, even Mount Everest. It covers an area of about 78.6 square
kilometers and is a haven for trekkers, nature lovers, and wildlife enthusiasts
alike.
The park is most famous for the Sandakphu-Phalut trek, which offers panoramic views
of the Himalayan range. Along the trails, travelers encounter dense rhododendron
forests, alpine meadows, and rare wildlife species like the elusive red panda,
Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard, and numerous exotic bird species. In spring,
Singalila bursts into a riot of colors with blooming magnolias and rhododendrons,
while autumn brings crystal-clear skies perfect for mountain viewing.
Singalila National Park lies at an elevation ranging from 7,000 to over 12,000
feet, making it one of India’s highest national parks. The park’s terrain is a
breathtaking mix of alpine meadows, rolling hills, rhododendron forests, and
mist-covered valleys. On a clear day, visitors are rewarded with an
awe-inspiring view of the Himalayan range, including the mighty Kanchenjunga,
the world’s third-highest peak, and even glimpses of Mount Everest in the
distance.
Singalila National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to an incredible variety
of flora and fauna. Its most famous resident is the elusive red panda, a rare
and endangered species that finds refuge in the park’s dense forests.
Birdwatchers will delight in spotting Himalayan species such as the satyr
tragopan, blood pheasant, and the vibrant Himalayan monal.
Trekking Capital of Darjeeling
The park is perhaps best known for the legendary Sandakphu–Phalut trek, one of
India’s most scenic trekking routes. This trail takes you through enchanting
forests of magnolia, oak, and pine, past blooming rhododendrons in spring, and
along ridges that straddle the border between India and Nepal. Each step offers
new perspectives of snow-capped peaks, terraced fields, and remote mountain
villages.
For many, reaching Sandakphu is the highlight of the journey. At 11,941 feet,
it’s the highest point in West Bengal and offers a 180-degree view of four of
the world’s five highest mountains—Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu.
Continuing on to Phalut adds even more breathtaking landscapes and cultural
encounters.
